Lord Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill was a British nobleman and Conservative statesman noted for his parliamentary work and for founding an internal current of renewal within the Conservative Party at the end of the 19th century. Elected MP for Woodstock in 1874, he became known for his eloquence and for forming the so‑called “Fourth Party,” a group of Tories who advocated a more democratic conservatism open to social reforms, known as “Tory Democracy.”

During Lord Salisbury’s government he held prominent offices, including Secretary of State for India, a term that included the annexation of Burma. He later served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the House of Commons, but lost influence after a controversial budget and a resignation that the party leadership did not reverse.

Boosted in part by the social notoriety of his wife, Jennie Jerome, Randolph left an ambiguous political legacy: he was recognized as a forceful figure in Conservative modernization but saw his political career curtailed by personal and health crises in his later years. He is also remembered for his family connection to Winston Churchill.
