Lothar-Günther Buchheim was a German writer, journalist and painter whose literary and artistic work left an imprint on postwar culture. Drawn to the press as a teenager, he studied at the Dresden School of Fine Arts and built a career that combined reporting, literary creation and art collecting. During World War II he served as a naval propaganda correspondent and joined the crew of the submarine U-96, an experience that provided the basis for his later work. His name reached international prominence with Das Boot (The Boat), a 1973 novel inspired by life aboard German submarines. The book became a global bestseller and was adapted for film in 1981, helping to broaden public awareness and debate about the submariners’ experience during the conflict. It sold millions of copies and established Buchheim as a leading author on the subject. After the war he devoted himself intensively to the visual arts and curatorship: he maintained a private collection, founded a gallery and published studies and monographs on artists such as Picasso, Braque and Max Beckmann. His later output includes novels such as Die Festung and Der Abschied, which expanded his thematic range beyond memories of the war.
