Louise Daphne Mensch (née Bagshawe) is a British writer and commentator who also served in politics as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Corby from 2010 to 2012. Initially known in the 1990s for chick-lit novels published under her maiden name, she has sold more than two million copies over a literary career often centered on ambitious female protagonists. Elected to Parliament in 2010, she sat on the Culture, Media and Sport Committee and came to public attention for questioning the Murdoch brothers during hearings on the phone-hacking scandal. Her performance drew praise from parts of the press, though she was also involved in controversies and later admitted to past drug use after personal attacks that followed the hearings. In 2012 she resigned her seat to move to New York with her second husband, Peter Mensch. In the United States she worked for News Corp and helped launch the site Heat Street; since then she has published mainly on her blog and social media. Some of her work as a commentator has attracted criticism for promoting unverified allegations about American politics. Mensch studied English at Christ Church, Oxford, and previously worked in the music industry and in journalism before establishing herself as an author and a public figure active in debates about media and social networks.
