Lucia Annunziata is an Italian journalist, writer, television presenter and politician. She studied at the University of Naples and graduated in philosophy from the University of Salerno; before committing full‑time to journalism, she taught in secondary schools in Sardinia between 1972 and 1974. She has been a professional journalist since 1976.

She began her career at Il Manifesto as a correspondent in the United States. She then worked for La Repubblica covering Central America, Latin America and the Middle East, reporting on conflicts and political changes such as the Sandinista Revolution, the civil war in El Salvador and the fall of Jean‑Claude Duvalier's regime in Haiti. In 1993 she moved to Corriere della Sera as a Washington correspondent; later she also became a columnist for La Stampa.

At RAI she created and directed Linea Tre in 1995, headed TG3 between 1996 and 1998 and served as president of the state broadcaster between 2003 and 2004, becoming the second woman to hold the post. From 2005 to 2023 she hosted the political programs In mezz'ora and Mezz'ora in più on Rai 3, establishing herself as one of the main interviewers in Italy's public debate. In 2023 she left RAI after nearly three decades of collaboration. Between 2012 and 2020 she directed the Italian edition of the HuffPost.

She is the author of books including Bassa intensità, on the war in El Salvador; La crepa, about the 1998 Sarno disaster; No, opposing the war in Iraq; La sinistra, l'America, la guerra; 1977. L'ultima foto di famiglia; Il potere in Italia; L'Italia post‑populista; and L'inquilino, an analysis of the crisis in the Italian political system between the governments of Mario Monti and Giorgia Meloni.

In 2024 she was elected to the European Parliament as an independent on the Democratic Party list, joining the Socialists and Democrats group. Her political mandate marks a new phase following a career defined by international journalism, leadership of public media and analysis of the relations between the press and power.
