Lucile Randon, known as Sister André, was a French religious sister and supercentenarian whose life spanned more than a century of social service and devotion. Born in Alès, she converted to Catholicism at 19 and, as an adult, devoted herself to care work: she was a housekeeper in her youth and, from the age of 25, worked in a hospital caring for elderly people and orphaned children. In 1944 she joined the Daughters of Charity, taking her religious name in memory of a deceased brother. Over the decades she kept a low profile, tied to the daily work of care and charity that defined her career. In 2009 she moved into a nursing home in Toulon, where she attracted public attention when, in 2022–2023, she became the world’s oldest known person following the death of another supercentenarian. Her longevity also brought moments of official recognition: at 115 she received greetings from Pope Francis. In January 2021 she contracted COVID-19 during an outbreak at her institution, remained asymptomatic and recovered, becoming at the time the oldest confirmed survivor of the disease. She died in Toulon on 17 January 2023 at the age of 118, leaving a legacy as an exemplar of religious vocation and long dedication to caring for others.
