Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta was an economist and prominent Mexican politician, a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Over his career he served as a deputy and senator, led the PRI as its president from 1988 to 1992, and headed the Secretariat of Social Development, a post that placed him at the center of government decision‑making in the early 1990s. A graduate in economics from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, with postgraduate studies in the United States and research in Austria, Colosio also worked as a university lecturer. He became nationally known for his party work and for his role in the presidential succession during Carlos Salinas de Gortari’s administration. Chosen as the PRI’s presidential candidate in November 1993, he delivered speeches addressing social inequality, the situation of indigenous communities and abuses of power, signaling a break with the prevailing model of presidential dominance. His campaign drew intense public attention at a time of severe political turmoil, including the Zapatista uprising. In March 1994 he was assassinated in Tijuana during a campaign rally, an event that caused national shock, provoked controversy over who was responsible, and had direct consequences for the presidential succession and recent Mexican political history. His legacy remains linked to debates over political renewal and the tensions that affected the PRI in the 1990s.
