Luis Federico Leloir was an Argentine physician and biochemist, internationally recognized for his advances in carbohydrate metabolism. His team identified sugar nucleotides—most notably uridine diphosphate glucose—clarifying the biochemical pathways for synthesis and storage of sugars. These discoveries made it possible to understand the molecular basis of congenital diseases such as galactosemia and established what is now known as the Leloir pathway. For decades he directed the Instituto de Investigaciones Bioquímicas, founded by the Fundación Campomar, transforming it into a leading center that attracted researchers from several countries and trained generations of Argentine scientists. Even facing budgetary constraints, he carried out innovative experiments with modest means, demonstrating the feasibility of high-level research outside major financial hubs. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1970, Leloir also received numerous national and international honors and maintained a teaching role at the University of Buenos Aires. His scientific legacy influenced the study of glycoproteins and hepatic metabolism, leaving a lasting impact on biochemistry and clinical medicine.
