Lydia Welti-Escher was a Swiss patron of the arts during the Belle Époque and one of Switzerland’s wealthiest heiresses in the 19th century. The only child of influential politician and entrepreneur Alfred Escher, she assumed family and cultural responsibilities early, became a correspondent and interlocutor for intellectuals such as Gottfried Keller, and invested in artistic pursuits by studying music and supporting painters. She married Friedrich Emil Welti, but her affair with the artist Karl Stauffer-Bern transformed Lydia’s public and private life: the scandal led to her temporary confinement in Rome, Stauffer’s imprisonment, and social stigmatization that resulted in her isolation after returning to Switzerland. Amid this personal crisis she devoted a large portion of her fortune to founding a cultural institution. In 1890 she established the Gottfried Keller Stiftung, bequeathing Villa Belvoir and substantial assets for the preservation and promotion of the arts in Switzerland; although her original intent included provisions to encourage women’s independence in the arts, that clause was removed from the foundation’s official statutes. Her death in 1891 ended the direct Escher line, and her legacy endures through the foundation, which is recognized among Switzerland’s national cultural heritage.
