Madhur Jaffrey is an actress and writer born in India whose career has spanned film, television and gastronomy, making her a central figure in bringing Indian cuisine to Western audiences. She appeared in important films by the Merchant–Ivory team, including Shakespeare Wallah (1965), for which she received the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Festival, and worked in radio, theatre and television over several decades.
Her work as an author and presenter changed perceptions of Indian cooking: the book An Invitation to Indian Cooking (1973) is often cited as a milestone in popularizing those flavors and was inducted into the James Beard Foundation Cookbook Hall of Fame. Since then she has published more than a dozen books and hosted influential television series, including Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cookery.
She has also worked in the culinary field as a consultant — among other projects she was involved with the renowned New York restaurant Dawat — and has been recognized for her role in cultural relations between the United Kingdom, India and the United States, receiving honors such as the CBE and, more recently, the Padma Bhushan.
In addition to her culinary output and performing career, Jaffrey has published memoirs about her childhood in India during the final years of British rule, offering personal accounts of the historical context and food traditions that shaped her life.
