Marcel Dadi was a guitarist, composer and music educator born in Tunisia and raised in France, known for popularizing fingerpicking among French-speaking guitarists. From the 1970s he distinguished himself both as a performer and as the author of instructional methods and transcriptions, promoting the works and techniques of masters such as Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Jerry Reed and Doc Watson. His first album and his teaching books became standard references, selling large numbers of copies and helping to spread the acoustic guitar in France. Recognized internationally, Dadi collaborated and recorded with prominent names in country and fingerstyle, received from Chet Atkins the honorary title of Certified Guitar Player and served as ambassador for guitar brands, while promoting instruments and pedagogical innovations. He founded a guitar festival and a commercial space devoted to the instrument, expanding his institutional and educational reach. His career featured landmark concerts — including performances at the Olympia and in Nashville — and a strong editorial and pedagogical presence. He died tragically in 1996, leaving a lasting legacy in the training of generations of guitarists and in the international fingerpicking scene; tributes and events continue to celebrate his work.
