Marcel Jouhandeau was a novelist, short-story writer, essayist and memoirist whose work is shaped by a persistent tension between Catholic faith and homosexual experience. A literature teacher at a Catholic Parisian school for nearly four decades, he won literary reputation with texts inspired by his native town, presented under the fictional name Chaminadour, and with chronicles that probe passions, guilt and intimate conflicts. Jouhandeau’s output includes novels, autobiographical volumes and a long series of “Journaliers”; he addressed openly subjects that had been taboo, such as homosexuality, in works like De l’abjection and the Écrits secrets trilogy. His personal life — a marriage marked by conflict, an intense relationship with religious belief and episodes of psychological suffering — supplied much of his fiction and chronicles. Between 1936 and 1941 he published texts and took part in initiatives with antisemitic overtones, episodes he revisited later in his memoirs. Despite those passages, his work continued to be published and to exert influence with major French publishers, leaving a complex legacy that still prompts debate about morality, art and identity in the twentieth century.
