Margaret Alice Murray was a prominent British archaeologist, Egyptologist and historian whose academic career unfolded mainly at University College London, where she served from 1898 to 1935. A professional pioneer, she became the first woman to give lectures in archaeology in the United Kingdom and worked closely with Flinders Petrie on excavations in Egypt, taking part in work at Abydos and Saqqara and being credited as one of the discoverers of the Osireion. Her activity also included work at prehistoric sites in the Mediterranean and leadership of expeditions in the Levant.
In addition to her scholarly output, Murray devoted herself to public outreach: she wrote several books on Egyptology for general readers and taught in major museums, complementing her university career. Active in the suffrage movement, she worked to improve working conditions for women at the university, which increased her public and intellectual profile.
Alongside her achievements in Egyptology, she developed the so-called witch-cult hypothesis and carried out studies of folklore and witchcraft that influenced later religious movements, although these works were widely discredited and criticized by the academic community. She served as president of the Folklore Society and continued publishing and teaching into old age, leaving a complex legacy of recognized contributions to archaeology alongside controversy in her witchcraft studies.
