Margaret Higgins Sanger was an American nurse, writer, sexologist, and activist who played a central role in popularizing the term “birth control” and in creating the first family planning clinics in the United States. In 1916 she founded the organization that would become associated with Planned Parenthood and worked to spread contraceptive methods and protect women from unsafe abortions, confronting censorship laws such as the Comstock Act and even being jailed for distributing information about contraception. Her work expanded access to information and the practice of birth control, contributing to the rise of the modern movement for women’s reproductive rights. At the same time, Sanger held controversial positions: she advocated ideas linked to racial improvement and proposed reproductive-regulation policies influenced by eugenic arguments, which have drawn lasting criticism. She also worked within African American communities, such as in Harlem, where she sought to establish reproductive health services with local participation. Her legacy is mixed: acknowledged for advances in reproductive health and information, yet critically reassessed because of ties to eugenic discourse and its effects on marginalized populations.
