Marie-Georges Picquart was an officer of the French Army and minister of war, remembered mainly for his decisive role in the Dreyfus affair. A graduate of Saint-Cyr who advanced through the General Staff, he became head of the Deuxième Bureau, the army’s intelligence service, in 1895, where he discovered that the bordereau that had condemned Alfred Dreyfus was actually written by Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy. When he disclosed this information, Picquart met resistance from his superiors and internal sabotage; because of his investigations he was removed from the intelligence post and sent to command in North Africa. Accused of forgery amid the disputes surrounding the case, he even faced the prospect of a court-martial, but he remained firm in his conclusions about the document’s true authorship. After the case was reopened and Dreyfus was eventually exonerated, Picquart was promoted to brigadier general in 1906 and joined Georges Clemenceau’s cabinet as minister of war (1906–1909). He later returned to military command, and his actions are regarded as central to restoring justice in the affair, leaving a legacy of institutional integrity and civic courage.
