Marita Koch is one of Germany’s greatest sprinters, best known for the 200 m and 400 m while representing East Germany. Between the late 1970s and the mid-1980s she set multiple world records — 16 outdoors and 14 indoors — and still holds the 400 m world record of 47.60 s, set in Canberra in 1985. Trained on the track by Wolfgang Meier, who later became her husband and remained her coach throughout her career, Koch won Olympic and continental titles, including the 400 m gold in Moscow in 1980 and European Championship victories in 1978, 1982 and 1986. She also ran on relay teams that established world records in the 4×100 m and 4×400 m. Her period of greatest prominence coincided with intense athletic rivalry during the Cold War, when sporting performances carried strong international impact. Koch retired in 1987, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable marks and a standard of speed and endurance in short- and mid-distance events.
