Martha Bernays was the wife of neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud and played a central role in the private life and household management of the Freud family. Born into a prominent, observant Jewish family — her grandfather served as chief rabbi of Hamburg and the family had ties to influential intellectuals and businessmen — Martha brought education, elegance, and disciplined domestic management to the marriage. During the engagement and the long correspondence with Freud, their relationship went through tensions and intense declarations of affection; in married life she became known for running an orderly household and for the stable environment she provided for their children. The couple had six children, including Anna Freud, who would become an important figure in child psychoanalysis. Throughout her life Martha held a discreet moral authority within the family circle and was remembered by contemporaries as reserved, punctual, and devoted. Questions about the couple’s intimacy and rumors involving relatives have been debated by biographers; nonetheless, her public reputation remains chiefly tied to the image of a responsible matriarch and a constant presence in Sigmund Freud’s life.
