Martin Buber was an Austrian-born philosopher, writer, and educator who became a central figure in twentieth-century religious and social thought. Known for his reflections on existence and dialogue, he formulated the conceptual distinction between the I–Thou and I–It relations, arguing that human reality is fundamentally constituted through encounters and communication between persons. This emphasis on intersubjectivity influenced philosophy, pedagogy, and religious studies. Active in the Zionist movement in the early decades of the twentieth century, Buber also worked as an editor and cultural organizer before devoting himself to scholarship and teaching. His work on Hasidism translated and reinterpreted Jewish mystical traditions for modern audiences, and he also undertook a German translation of the Hebrew Bible. Persecuted by the Nazi regime, he left Germany in 1938 and settled in Jerusalem, where he taught at the Hebrew University and engaged in dialogue with intellectuals and Zionist leaders. His writings include philosophical essays, collections of Hasidic tales, and works on ethics and community, leaving a lasting legacy in the fields of dialogical philosophy, education, and Jewish studies.
