Martine Aubry is a French politician affiliated with the Socialist Party, known for her roles in government and local administration. She held ministerial posts responsible for labour, employment and social solidarity (1991–1993; 1997–2000), during which she became a central figure in France’s social policy. She led notable initiatives such as the creation of the "Emplois-jeunes" scheme, the establishment of the Couverture maladie universelle (CMU) and, above all, the law that reduced the working week to 35 hours, commonly referred to as the "Loi Aubry". Elected mayor of Lille in 2001, she built a long municipal career, being reelected to subsequent terms and also presiding over the local urban community. At the national level she served as first secretary of the Socialist Party from 2008 to 2012 and was a candidate in the party’s internal contest for the 2011–2012 presidential nomination, in which she lost to François Hollande. Her career combines administrative experience, ties to the state apparatus and a leading role in shaping social policy at the end of the 20th century and the start of the 21st. An influential figure on the French left, Aubry left a legacy in labour reform and the expansion of social protection.
