Masaru Emoto was a Japanese businessman and author known for popularizing the series The Messages of Water, in which he presented photographs of frozen water crystals and described experiments claiming that words, images, or music influence their formation. His books reached a wide audience—selling millions of copies—and his ideas were featured in documentaries that helped make him notable within spiritual and pseudoscientific circles.
Emoto stated that he was not a scientist and organized his team's work with an emphasis on the aesthetic selection of photographs, a practice that drew sharp criticism from the scientific community. Specialists pointed to a lack of experimental controls, absence of transparency in methods, and vulnerability to human bias, calling into question the validity of the results attributed to the "message" of water.
He received both support from followers and condemnation from critics: independent articles and reviews did not confirm his findings, and skeptical figures offered controlled tests that were not answered conclusively. Despite the controversy, Emoto left a significant cultural legacy by prompting debates about science, credulity, and the boundaries between spirituality and scientific method.
