Mata Hari, the stage name of Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, rose to prominence in the early 20th century as an exotic dancer and courtesan on the Parisian artistic scene. Her public image, crafted through sensual performances and an exotic persona that purported Javanese roots, brought her immediate fame and the patronage of influential figures such as industrialist Émile Guimet. She also worked as a model and became an emblem of the femme fatale in Western culture. During World War I she was accused of spying for the German Empire; tried in France, she was convicted and executed by firing squad in 1917. Her story became controversial: historians and commentators have argued that evidence used against her may have been fabricated and that part of the conviction arose from the search for a scapegoat amid the wartime climate. Mata Hari’s case entered the collective imagination and inspired books, films, and plays, cementing her status as a tragic, mythical figure—seen at times as a symbol of female seduction and power and at others as a victim of the political and legal circumstances of her era.
