Matt (Matthias) Koehl was an American political activist and leader known for heading the continuation of the neo-fascist organization founded by George Lincoln Rockwell. Trained in the military and involved from a young age in racist groups, he assumed leadership of the movement in 1967 after Rockwell’s assassination and sought to refine its organizational work, favoring a more discreet, hierarchical structure over the spectacular actions of the earlier period.
Over the following decades, Koehl worked to consolidate internal control, a process that produced schisms and departures by dissident members; he maintained contacts and alliances with international neo-Nazi activists and, in the 1980s, steered the organization toward a more religious and ideological character influenced by currents that exalted Nazi symbols and figures. Under his direction the organization struggled financially and relocated to areas of the American Midwest, sustaining a small core of militants.
Koehl kept a private profile regarding his personal life, but his leadership left a mark on the transnational neo-Nazi network by institutionalizing cult-like practices and the ideological continuity of the movement. He died in 2014, and his leadership was succeeded by another figure from the group.
