Max D. Barnes was an American country singer and songwriter, active mainly from the 1970s through the 1990s. After working as a truck driver, he moved to Nashville and established himself as both performer and writer, recording for labels such as Ovation, Polydor and Country Roads and registering more than 400 songs over his lifetime. As a songwriter, he wrote hits that became staples of the country repertoire, including “Chiseled in Stone” (co-written with Vern Gosdin), “Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes” (George Jones), “Drinkin' and Dreamin'” (Waylon Jennings) and numerous tracks for Randy Travis, Pam Tillis and Alan Jackson. His songs sold tens of millions of records worldwide and were widely covered by artists across the scene. Barnes received industry recognition with major awards: he won the Country Music Association Song of the Year twice (1988 and 1992), was nominated for a Grammy and earned multiple BMI awards as well as induction into the Nashville Songwriters Association International Hall of Fame in 1992. His legacy endures in his influence on traditional country music and in compositions that remain in the catalogs of leading performers.
