Max Ludwig Henning Delbrück was a physicist turned biologist whose work played a decisive role in the emergence of molecular biology. Trained in theoretical physics in Göttingen, Delbrück brought physicists closer to biology by proposing quantitative approaches to study the nature of genes, prompting researchers to address genetic problems with experimental and theoretical methods drawn from physics. At the end of the 1930s he moved to the United States, where he worked on Drosophila genetics and later led and encouraged the Phage Group — a research core that, under his influence and in collaboration with Salvador Luria and Alfred Hershey, advanced understanding of viral infection mechanisms and cellular physiology. This body of work was recognized with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1969, shared with Luria and Hershey. Beyond research, Delbrück took part in important intellectual exchanges of the time, including contributions to the Macy Conferences, which helped consolidate ideas in cybernetics. He also left publications reflecting his interdisciplinary outlook, bringing together physics, biology, and scientific theory.
