Michael Sandison is a Scottish electronic musician, best known as one half of the duo Boards of Canada alongside his brother Marcus Eoin. The pair, raised in Cullen, Moray, built their career from home experiments with tapes and samples, evolving into an influential project within contemporary electronic music. Their work gained attention after signing with Warp Records and releasing Music Has the Right to Children in 1998, an album praised by critics and often cited as a milestone for the genre. Subsequent releases, including Geogaddi (2002) and The Campfire Headphase (2005), explored tonal variations—from the dark and esoteric to a more organic use of instrumentation—while retaining an aesthetic reminiscent of 1970s media. Boards of Canada have been identified as pioneers of what came to be called IDM and of the strand known as hauntology, addressing themes such as nostalgia, childhood memory, science, and environmental concerns. Known for a reclusive stance and enigmatic promotional tactics—such as subliminal messages and alternate reality games—the duo has exerted considerable influence on later generations of electronic producers.
