Mikis Theodorakis was a Greek composer, lyricist and public figure whose output exceeded a thousand compositions, leaving a deep imprint on the country’s music and culture. He achieved international recognition for film scores such as Zorba the Greek, Z and Serpico, receiving awards and nominations including BAFTA, Grammy and Golden Globe. His piece "Mauthausen Trilogy" is often cited as one of the most moving musical reflections on the Holocaust.

Across his career, Theodorakis developed an aesthetic that combined Greek popular tradition, Byzantine liturgy and symphonic forms — a concept he called "metassinfonic" — and set poems by major authors in choral and symphonic works, among them Seferis, Elytis and Ritsos. He founded orchestras and promoted the dissemination of classical music to broader audiences.

Politics and art were always intertwined in his life: an opponent of the 1967–1974 military regime, he was persecuted, imprisoned and exiled; he also served as a parliamentarian and minister, taking part in wide coalitions during times of crisis. His struggle against the dictatorship and his activism on left-wing causes left a lasting mark on Greek political culture.

Recognized in his lifetime as the Greek composer with the greatest international profile, Theodorakis left an artistic and civic legacy that continues to influence musicians, activists and the national imagination.
