Miloš Forman was a filmmaker, screenwriter and actor born in the former Czechoslovakia who became known both for revitalizing Czech cinema and for his international success after emigrating to the United States in 1968. In the first phase of his career he directed documentaries and distinctive Czech comedies such as Loves of a Blonde, which won a prize at Venice and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His European career was interrupted by the 1968 invasion; after settling in New York he taught at the university level and became an influential figure in film education. In the U.S. he achieved worldwide recognition with vigorous adaptations and memorable performances: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) earned him the Oscar for Best Director and secured his place in Hollywood; Amadeus (1984) won him the award again and also took Best Picture. Other notable works include Hair, Dangerous Liaisons, The People vs. Larry Flynt and cinematic biographies of Andy Kaufman and Francisco Goya. Honored at Cannes, the BAFTAs, the Césars and festivals such as Karlovy Vary and Venice, Forman left both an artistic and an institutional legacy, influencing generations of filmmakers and remaining active in festivals and in academic film training.
