Youree Dell Harris was an American actress and television personality known for portraying the public figure Miss Cleo, the spokesperson for a telephone psychic-reading service that ran infomercials from 1997 to 2003. Adopting a persona who claimed to be a Jamaican shaman, Harris became widely recognizable for the theatrical tone and accent she used in live calls and television advertisements. Harris’s career included stage work in Seattle in the 1990s and roles as a voice actress, as well as the publication of a book tied to the Miss Cleo image. Her highest notoriety came with the operation of the Psychic Readers Network, whose billing and advertising practices prompted numerous lawsuits and a federal investigation into deceptive practices; the network’s owners reached a multimillion-dollar settlement, while Harris was not criminally indicted. Over the years the Miss Cleo character sparked controversy about authenticity and representation, including litigation over the ownership of the persona. Harris also pursued later projects, such as recordings and public appearances, and faced health problems in her final years, dying in 2016. Her career continues to be referenced in documentaries and productions that revisit the phenomenon of telephone psychic services.
