Malcolm “Molly” Duncan was a Scottish tenor saxophonist, best known as a founding member of the Average White Band. His tone and phrasing helped shape the group’s funk and soul identity, which made an impact by combining grooves with precise horn arrangements.
Throughout his career Duncan was a sought-after studio and stage musician, recording with names such as Ray Charles, Tom Petty, Buddy Guy, Ben E. King, Dire Straits and Bryan Ferry, and performing live with artists including Marvin Gaye, Chaka Khan and Eric Clapton. His work demonstrates versatility across soul, funk, blues and rock.
In the 1990s and 2000s he also embraced collaborations with drum-and-bass artists, appearing on releases from the Good Looking Records label, and took part in projects such as Knee Deep, Cold Sweat and the Horny Horns, expanding his repertoire into rhythmic fusions and experimentation.
In 2015 he reunited with former colleagues to form The 360 Band, a project that revisited part of the Average White Band’s legacy and resulted in the album Three Sixty (2017), reaffirming his influence as an interpreter and builder of grooves for succeeding generations.
