Moses Louis Annenberg was a publishing executive and media entrepreneur who became an influential figure in early 20th-century American journalism. An immigrant from Prussia, he rose from selling newspapers to controlling publications focused on horse racing and entertainment, including the Daily Racing Form, The New York Morning Telegraph and, later, the Philadelphia Inquirer. His business activities built a corporate network that would form the nucleus of the family holdings that followed. As a businessman, Annenberg was known for expanding niche titles—horse racing and entertainment—and for buying and selling newspapers, as in his venture with the Miami Tribune and regional investments in Ohio and Wisconsin. His strategy of assembling assets and brands left a financial legacy that, after his death, provided the foundation for his son Walter’s creation of Triangle Publications. Publicly, his career was also marked by controversy: he was convicted of tax evasion in the 1930s, served a federal sentence and paid a record fine for the time. He died in 1942; properties associated with his name, such as Ranch A in Wyoming, have been recognized for their historic value.
