Moses Hess was a German-Jewish philosopher and socialist, recognized as a forerunner of modern Zionism. Trained in philosophy at the University of Bonn, he worked as a journalist in Paris during the events of 1848 and was a contemporary and associate of thinkers such as Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Ferdinand Lassalle. He published influential works including Sacred History of Humanity by a Disciple of Spinoza (1837), The European Triarchy (1841), Consequences of a Revolution of the Proletariat (1847) and, above all, Rome and Jerusalem: The Last National Question (1862). In these writings he blended influences from Spinoza, Hegel and the utopian socialists, articulating a secular messianism alongside social concerns. Initially an advocate of Jewish assimilation in tolerant societies, Hess revised his position in response to persecutions and studies of race, coming to argue that only the recovery of collective identity and national autonomy would secure respect and safety for Jews. His emphasis on conflicts among nationalities and on the cultural dimension of history set him apart from the Marxist focus on economic causes. In his later years he turned to the natural sciences; his career left a mark as a bridge between socialism, Jewish messianism and the earliest formulations of Zionist thought.
