Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq was a Pakistani Army officer and political leader who governed as president from 1978 until his death in 1988. He rose to power after deposing Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1977, imposing martial law and consolidating broad presidential powers. As chief of the Army, he played a central role in domestic politics and in reorganizing the armed forces.
On the foreign front, Zia led coordination—backed by the United States and Saudi Arabia—during the Soviet–Afghan War, supporting the Afghan mujahideen and expanding Pakistan’s regional influence. He also strengthened ties with China and the United States, while relations with India deteriorated in episodes such as the Siachen conflict.
Domestically, he promoted a program of legislative Islamization that reshaped the country’s legal and social framework, while increasing censorship and restricting civil liberties. He encouraged acceleration of the nuclear program and pursued industrialization and deregulation policies that coincided with high economic growth during his government.
Zia died in 1988 in a plane crash that also killed several senior military officers and diplomats. His figure remains polarizing: credited with strategic gains and economic growth, and criticized for weakening democratic institutions and promoting controversial religious laws.
