Muriel Gray is a multifaceted figure in Scotland’s cultural life, working as an author, journalist and broadcaster. She became known on alternative television in the 1980s as an interviewer on the program The Tube and built a career in radio and the press, writing for outlets such as The Guardian and the Sunday Herald. Her editorial work has earned awards, including Columnist of the Year in 2001. As a novelist, Gray found success with horror works — The Trickster, Furnace and The Ancient — winning praise from established writers such as Stephen King. She has also authored non‑fiction books, including a history of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and an account of her experiences as a mountaineer. A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, she began her career as an illustrator and in museum design before creating her own production company, later incorporated into IWC Media. In the institutional sphere she was the first woman elected Rector of the University of Edinburgh and became the first female chair of the board of the Glasgow School of Art. Gray has long served on cultural boards and institutions: she was a non‑executive member of the BBC board, took part in the governance of the British Museum and is patron and curator for various Scottish arts and education organizations. Her career combines cultural production, institutional leadership and public writing.
