Nancy Hamilton was a multifaceted figure in American theatre and film: actress, playwright, lyricist, director and producer. A graduate of Smith College, where she distinguished herself as a leader of the student dramatic association, she made her New York debut writing and performing in revues that became landmarks on Broadway in the 1930s and 1940s. Her musical revues—One for the Money, Two for the Show and Three to Make Ready—helped launch the careers of performers such as Gene Kelly, Betty Hutton and Ray Bolger. As a lyricist, Hamilton is remembered for the popular song “How High the Moon” and for her dictum that “the only way to get a show is to write a show,” which reflects her entrepreneurial approach to theatre. She also worked in radio, wrote for magazines and contributed to screenplays that reached the cinema. During World War II she joined the American Theater Wing War Players on tours through combat zones in Europe. In the 1950s she produced a documentary about Helen Keller that earned her the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1955, a milestone that made her one of the first women honored in that category. Her personal and professional partnership with actress Katharine Cornell is also a significant part of her legacy.
