Nelly van Doesburg was a central figure in the Dutch avant-garde, active as a musician, dancer, painter and collector. Known by the pseudonyms Pétro van Doesburg (for Dada performances) and Cupera (for painting), she took part in tours and Dada events alongside figures such as Kurt Schwitters and Tristan Tzara, introducing modern repertoire by composers like Satie, Rieti and Honegger. Her classical piano training and public performances placed her at the center of the musical and performative experiments of the 1920s. Married to Theo van Doesburg, she became a champion and curator of his work after his death, working to reshape the artist’s image and promote international exhibitions. As manager of part of his estate, she negotiated significant sales to institutions and collectors, helping the circulation of European abstractionism in the United States. In addition to her curatorial work, she produced paintings influenced by De Stijl aesthetics and organized avant-garde exhibitions in Dutch museums. Her documentary archive was preserved and left valuable material for the study of the De Stijl movement and the twentieth-century avant-garde scene.
