Norma McCorvey was the central figure in the Roe v. Wade (1973) case, which led the United States Supreme Court to declare state laws banning abortion unconstitutional. Publicly identified by the pseudonym “Jane Roe,” McCorvey did not appear at the hearings and, during the litigation, gave birth and placed the child for adoption. The ruling became a legal and social landmark, profoundly shaping the debate over reproductive rights in the U.S.
Over the course of her life, her political and religious positions underwent notable changes: in her later years she became evangelical and later Catholic, and she joined the anti-abortion movement, at one point saying that her participation in the case had been a mistake. Subsequent documentaries recorded conflicting statements from her, including a confession in which she said she had not truly supported the anti-abortion movement and had received payments for her statements.
McCorvey’s personal life—marked by family problems, early marriages, substance dependence, and adoptions—was always intertwined with the public symbolism of Roe. Her case and testimony continued to provoke controversy and debate over representation, activism, and the role of individuals involved in historic litigation.
