Oliver Reed was an English actor whose physical presence and tough-guy image defined more than four decades of cinema. He became known for intense, often dark roles in genre pictures and major studio films, standing out in titles such as Oliver! (in which he played Bill Sikes in the Oscar-winning adaptation), Women in Love, The Devils and the adventures of The Three Musketeers. His collaborations with directors like Ken Russell and Michael Winner made him an emblematic figure of British cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. Reed began in the industry with small parts and roles in Hammer films, reaching leading status in works such as The Curse of the Werewolf and The Trap. At his peak, in 1971, he was voted one of Britain’s most popular actors. Over his career he alternated between commercial films and more controversial, artistic projects, showing versatility despite the type of image associated with him. From the mid-1970s his alcoholism began to affect his professional life, although he continued to appear in notable roles until his death. His final film, Gladiator, earned him a posthumous BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor, cementing a legacy as a vigorous and memorable performer in British cinema.
