Otto Wilhelm Rahn was a German medievalist and writer known for his research on the myths of the Holy Grail and for linking medieval chivalric literature with the Cathar movement. Trained in philology, he focused on the literary history of French languages and romances, and from the 1930s conducted expeditions to southern France where, in collaboration with local scholars, he argued for a direct connection between Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival and the Albigensian heresy.
In 1934 he published Kreuzzug gegen den Gral (Crusade Against the Grail), a work that attracted the attention of figures within the Nazi apparatus who were interested in Aryan traditions and esotericism. From that point he began receiving support and funding from elements of the SS to pursue research on sacred sites in Europe, research that also resulted in the book Luzifers Hofgesind (1937).
His institutional association with the SS and exposure to internal tensions marked his final years: connected to Heinrich Himmler, he clashed with colleagues and experienced disturbing episodes that led him to request resignation in 1939. Rahn’s death that same year provoked controversy and remains surrounded by speculation. His work influenced later literary and cultural narratives about the Grail and medieval mysticism.
