Owen Chamberlain was an American experimental physicist best known for his central role in the discovery of the antiproton, work that earned him the 1959 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Emilio Gino Segrè. A Dartmouth graduate with a PhD from the University of Chicago under Enrico Fermi, he devoted himself to particle accelerator research at the Berkeley Laboratory, where he studied proton–proton scattering using facilities such as the Bevatron.
His scientific output includes seminal experiments on antiprotons and studies of antiproton–nucleus cross sections, as well as instrumental contributions such as the development of the time projection chamber (TPC). These efforts established methods and instruments that advanced experimental particle physics in the postwar period.
Outside academia, Chamberlain was an activist engaged in peace and human rights causes, taking public positions against the Vietnam War and supporting Soviet colleagues imprisoned for dissent. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the 1980s, he withdrew from teaching in 1989 and died in 2006.
