Paul IV, born Giovanni Pietro Carafa, was a cardinal and church reformer who led the Catholic Church as pope from 1555 until 1559. From a noble Neapolitan family, he was notable for a learned formation—he knew Greek and Hebrew, studied theology and canon law, and engaged with humanist currents before breaking with them in favor of a strict reformist line. Before his pontificate, he founded, with Saint Cajetan, the Congregation of Clerics Regular (the Theatines) and held various diplomatic and administrative posts, including nuncio to Spain and inquisitor‑general. He initiated reforms of the Curia and clerical discipline, aligning himself with conciliar efforts and measures to moralize the clergy. His papacy is marked by strong anti‑Habsburg nationalism and harsh measures against religious dissent and Jewish communities: he established the Rome ghetto and strengthened the Roman Inquisition, actions that provoked controversy and left a lasting legacy. He also faced military tensions with Spain, seeking French support to defend the Papal States. Although he suppressed clerical abuses, his authoritarian methods and episodes of nepotism and papal scandal damaged his reputation and shaped the historical memory of his pontificate.
