Paul T. Winter Jr. is an American saxophonist, composer and bandleader, recognized as a pioneer of world music for integrating voices of nature with instruments from classical, jazz and global traditions. His professional career was established in the 1960s with the formation of the Paul Winter Consort, a group that pursued a democratic ensemble practice—giving solos and the ensemble equal importance—and that helped expand sonic boundaries by incorporating Brazilian and classical music influences. A recorder and traveler, Winter brought field recordings of natural sounds—such as whale song, eagles and wolves—into his work and used these sonorities both aesthetically and as a form of environmental activism. He founded Living Music Records in 1980 to house this musical and ecological vision and produced notable albums that included international collaborations, among them joint projects with Russian musicians in the 1980s. Connected to cultural and spiritual initiatives, Winter maintained a long relationship with the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where he conceived and presented the Missa Gaia (Earth Mass), a liturgical work that combines choir, soloists and natural sounds. His legacy lies in promoting music that fuses art and ecological awareness, expanding the musician’s role as a cultural and environmental agent.
