Paul Deschanel was a prominent French politician of the Third Republic, known for his parliamentary career and brief presidency in 1920. The son of senator and professor Émile Deschanel, he emerged early as an orator for the progressive Republican group and held key posts in the Chamber of Deputies, including the presidency of the body in 1898 and again in 1912, when he became a leading national speaker during the First World War. Over the course of his career, Deschanel took an active part in debates on secularism, foreign policy and democratic organization, chairing the Foreign Affairs Committee at sensitive moments, such as the discussion of the Franco‑German treaty of 1911. The author of several books on politics, history and colonial issues, he was elected to the Académie française in 1899, consolidating intellectual prestige alongside his parliamentary work. Elected President of the Republic in January 1920, he sought to expand the influence of the office during a period of postwar political reconfiguration, but his term was marked by episodes of mental illness that led to his resignation the same year. After a partial recovery, he returned to public service in the Senate until his death in 1922. His legacy combines a strong parliamentary presence and written contributions with a short, controversial presidency.
