Paul Langevin was a French physicist whose work shaped theoretical and applied physics in the early twentieth century. He is noted for formulating aspects of the theory of magnetism and for his contributions to the theory of Brownian motion, which helped establish the statistical foundations of physics. He published extensively on electromagnetism, atomic structure, and the theory of relativity, and was the author and organizer of numerous instructional courses and monographs. As a researcher, he introduced significant practical innovations: he was a pioneer in the piezoelectric use of quartz and, in 1916, built devices that led to sonar and naval echolocation systems. He also worked on neutron moderation, a technical activity that provided an important basis for the development of nuclear reactors. He served academically as director of the École supérieure de physique et de chimie industrielles de Paris and took an active part in the early Solvay Conferences, presiding over the last two he attended. Alongside his scientific career, he engaged publicly and politically, supporting social causes and labor movements. His legacy endures in institutions that honor him, such as the Institut Laue–Langevin, and in contributions that crossed theory and practice, influencing modern physics and subsequent technological applications.
