Paul Ichiro Terasaki was an American immunologist and researcher whose work transformed organ transplantation. An emeritus professor of surgery at UCLA, Terasaki developed in 1964 the microcytotoxic tissue-typing test — a method that, using only microliters of antisera, made it possible to identify HLA antigens and became the international standard for matching donors and recipients. That technique, together with his work on the humoral theory of rejection, which assigns antibodies a central role in graft failure, shaped clinical and laboratory protocols in transplant immunogenetics.
