Paul Waaktaar‑Savoy (born Pål Gamst) is a Norwegian composer, guitarist, and visual artist, best known as the principal songwriter and guitarist of the band a-ha. Responsible for much of the group's hits — including "Take On Me", "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.", "Hunting High and Low" and the 1987 James Bond theme "The Living Daylights" — he played a decisive role in the band selling tens of millions of records and achieving international success.
Before a-ha, he was a member of the band Bridges, whose repertoire and musical ideas helped prepare compositions that later evolved into a‑ha classics. Alongside his work with the trio, Waaktaar‑Savoy pursued other projects, notably the band Savoy — with which he recorded several albums and gained recognition in Norway — and more recent collaborations such as the project Weathervane.
Recognized for his skill as a lyricist and his influence on pop/rock from the 1980s onward, he was awarded the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav by King Harald in recognition of his services to Norwegian music. In addition to his musical career, he works as a painter, contributing to a multifaceted legacy in Norwegian culture.
