Pauline Betz (Pauline May Betz Addie) was an American tennis player who dominated in the 1940s and 1950s, known for five Grand Slam singles titles and victories in major national and international tournaments. A graduate of Rollins College with a master’s degree in economics from Columbia, Betz combined education and sport at a time when women’s tennis was gaining greater prominence.

Her competitive style and technique brought her to the top of the world rankings in 1946, according to contemporary writers, and made her the leading U.S. player for several years. Highlights include the 1946 Wimbledon title—won without dropping a set—and four U.S. championships, as well as rare feats such as a “golden set” in Cincinnati (1943).

Her shift to professionalism generated controversy when the American governing body revoked her amateur status in 1947; nevertheless, Betz remained visible on professional tours and won titles on the pro circuit during the 1950s. Her career was honored with induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1965.

Off the court, she married journalist Bob Addie, had five children, and left institutional legacies—including a tennis center named after her—along with a lasting influence on the history of American women’s tennis.
