Pegeen Vail Guggenheim was a Swiss-born painter who developed a singular body of work by combining elements of Surrealism and naïve painting. The daughter of Peggy Guggenheim and Laurence Vail, she grew up within European and American artistic circles and associated with central figures of the twentieth century such as Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy and André Breton, influences visible in her iconography of dreamlike scenes and improbable elements.
Over a short career she exhibited in major cultural centers — New York (including the Museum of Modern Art), Paris, London, Venice and Stockholm — and early on took part in exhibitions devoted to women artists. Her works often depict couples and families, figures drawn from her personal circle and episodes of her life, combining an apparently cheerful surface with undertones of isolation and suffering.
Married first to the painter Jean Hélion and later to Ralph Rumney, she had four children and lived between the United States, France and England. Pegeen’s output is remembered for its sensitive blend of childlike lyricism and a surreal poetics, which secured her a place in the artistic memory of the twentieth century.
