Percy Harrison Fawcett was a British archaeologist and explorer known for his early 20th-century expeditions in the Amazon and for his mysterious disappearance in 1925 while searching for a purported “lost city” he called “Z.” Trained as a military officer, he served in the Royal Artillery and carried out important geographical surveys in Brazil on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society, organizing several scientific and ethnographic forays between 1906 and 1924.
Fawcett became known for his ability to interact with indigenous peoples and for his interest in the archaeology, history, and topography of the Xingu region and the Serra do Roncador. His public reputation was also boosted by friendships with contemporary writers and by the adventurous aura surrounding his missions, which fed later legends and literary inspirations.
The final expedition in 1925, in which he traveled with his son Jack and companion Raleigh Rimmell, never returned; indigenous accounts, discoveries of skeletal remains and personal effects, and multiple rescue attempts have left the case shrouded in uncertainty. Fawcett’s disappearance became one of the great mysteries of Amazonian exploration and prompted numerous investigations, books, and cultural adaptations that cemented his status as an emblematic figure of the age of great exploration.
