Peter Jennings was a Canadian-born journalist and anchor who became one of the best-known voices in American television news. He began his career on Canadian productions in the late 1950s and, after working at CTV National News, moved to ABC in the mid-1960s, where he established himself as an international reporter. His overseas experience included seven years as bureau chief in the Middle East, based in Beirut, and a career as a foreign correspondent—credentials that solidified his reputation for covering conflicts and major global events. In 1983 he took over as anchor of ABC’s flagship newscast, World News Tonight, a post he held until April 2005. Jennings won several Emmy Awards, published works in collaboration—including the bestseller The Century—and participated in the network’s election coverage from 1984 onward. He retained Canadian citizenship until 2003, when he became a U.S. citizen, and remained a touchstone of television journalism until his death in 2005.
