Philip Gerald Cochran was a United States Army Air Forces officer, noted for developing tactical techniques for air combat, transport, and assault during World War II. He became co‑commander of the 1st Air Commando Group, a unit that supported long‑range penetration operations in Burma by providing resupply, evacuation, and close air support to Allied forces such as the Chindits. In the North African theater he commanded fighter squadrons in attack and escort missions, taking part in forward landings and bombing and parachute operations; his daring and tactical innovation earned him recognition and the French Croix de Guerre. In Burma, his units refined the technique of “snatching” gliders with C‑47s from improvised jungle strips, as well as improvisations to cut wires and evacuate the wounded—measures that raised the morale of ground troops. Cochran also had a cultural impact: he served as an inspiration for characters in Milton Caniff’s comic strips, such as Flip Corkin and General Philerie. He was known as a direct, pragmatic, results‑oriented leader who prioritized immediate support for troops in the field.
