Philip Cortelyou Johnson was a prominent twentieth-century American architect, regarded as one of the founders of modern architecture and the first recipient of the Pritzker Prize. A Harvard graduate, he combined institutional roles — notably as director of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York — with practical and theoretical work, helping to promote the International Style through exhibitions and publications. His work includes landmarks of American modernism and highly visible collaborative projects, among them the iconic Glass House (his own residence in New Canaan) and the Seagram Building, realized in partnership with Mies van der Rohe. He also designed significant commercial and cultural buildings in the United States and abroad, such as the Four Seasons and various civic and cultural centers. Johnson’s career also had controversial phases: in the 1930s he held positions and engaged in activities sympathetic to Nazism and worked in antisemitic populist journalism, a stance he later repudiated. Acknowledged for his institutional and academic influence, he leaves an ambivalent legacy — both for advancing architectural movements and for the ethical debates raised by his past.
